Xbox boss says details on brand’s future are coming next week

Reports and rumors started going wild this weekend that more Xbox games will head toward other platforms, including PlayStation. Now Xbox boss Phil Spencer has said that a business update event is coming next week “where we look forward to sharing more details with you about our vision for the future of Xbox.”

Reports, including from former GamesBeat writer Jeff Grubb (now at Giant Bomb), have noted that other Xbox titles like the next Gears of War are also getting consideration for PlayStation ports.

This is part of a potential new strategy for Microsoft to increase game sales. Going to more platforms will of course accomplish that, but it could hurt the Xbox consoles. That “vision for the future of Xbox” might mean a transition away from hardware (or at least a deemphasis on it).

The Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S launched in 2020, around the same time as the PlayStation 5. Despite strong specs and appealing features and services like Game Pass, Xbox has struggled to catch up to PlayStation. And while Game Pass was able to add Starfield last year and recently welcomed a viral hit with Palworld, it has struggled to grow its subscription numbers.

Xbox has also struggled to release a steady stream of high-profile exclusives, despite multiple acquisitions in the past several years, while PlayStation has been able to release big exclusives like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and God of War: Ragnarök.
