Taylor Swift expressed her deep sorrow and dismay following a deadly knife attack that took place at a children’s dance class centered around her music. The attack in Southport, England occurred Monday, July 30, and has left three children dead and several more injured.
“The horror of yesterday’s attack in Southport is washing over me continuously and I’m just completely in shock,” Swift wrote on Instagram Stories. “The loss of life and innocence and the horrendous trauma inflicted on everyone who was there, the families, and first responders. These were just little kids at a dance class. I am at a complete loss for how to ever convey my sympathies to these families.”

According to the latest statement from the Merseyside Police, the three girls who died were aged nine, seven, and six. Eight other children suffered stab wounds during the attack, and five of them are in critical condition. Two adults also remain in critical condition.
At a news conference last night, Merseyside Police Chief Constable Serena Kennedy said, “We believe that the adults who were injured were bravely trying to protect the children who were being attacked” (via the BBC).
A 17-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of murder, remains in custody, and is still being questioned by police. Authorities have not released the suspect’s name yet and have urged people against speculating after the name of an innocent person was shared on social media. The BBC said it had learned that the suspect was born in Cardiff to Rwandan parents and moved to Southport — which is north of Liverpool — in 2013.
Following the attack, Swift’s fans have also set up a crowdfunding effort in connection with Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool. Per a description, the JustGiving page will raise money for the families affected by the attack, as well as funeral funds.
