Return partners with Aethir GPUs for smart TV cloud gaming

Return Entertainment, a cloud gaming platform designed for smart TVs, has announced a strategic partnership with Aethir. Through this deal, Return will be able to leverage Aethir’s enterprise GPUs-as-a-service to scale its platform.

“Return Entertainment’s cloud gaming platform, powered by Aethir’s distributed GPU infrastructure, is a match made in heaven,” said Vesa Jutila, CEO of Return Entertainment. “By combining our strengths, we’re creating a one-stop solution for cloud-native smart TV gaming.”

In May 2024, Return Entertainment launched its debut title Rivals Arena on Samsung Smart TVs in the U.S.. The cinematic card battler is designed for couch co-op and is monetized through ads running in-between rounds. To ensure maximum accessibility with various TV models, players scan QR codes with their smartphones to use as controllers.

Through its partnership with Aethir, the Finnish developer aims to reach the nearly one billion Smart TVs globally — particularly the share not connected to consoles. Aethir’s decentralized enterprise-grade cloud computing network helps to minimize latency, ensuring smoother cloud gaming experiences. This will allow players to enjoy stable high-quality gaming experiences with only a smart TV and a basic stable internet connection.

“Aethir is dedicated to democratizing access to high-end gaming,” said Daniel Wang, CEO of Aethir. “This integration with Return Entertainment represents a significant milestone in our mission to advance cloud gaming technologies.

Paul Thind, CRO of Aethir, echoed this sentiment: “We are incredibly proud of this collaboration. By leveraging our combined technologies, we aim to capture global attention around the smart TV gaming experience.”

Aethir has inked a number of deals recently to support Web3 gaming with its decentralized network of GPUs. During this quarter, it closed deals with GameSwift, Meta Gravity and Sequence. The Singaporean company closed its most recent $9 million funding round in July 2023.

With this new deal in place, it’s unclear how quickly Return Entertainment will launch its titles in markets outside the U.S..
