FORT PIERCE — A sheriff’s deputy and a city police officer sustained serious, non-life-threatening injuries during a crash in Fort Pierce on Saturday night, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The incident happened as a St. Lucie County Sheriff’s deputy and a Fort Pierce Police officer were standing outside their vehicles during a felony traffic stop on U.S. 1 and North 25th Street. At 11:25 p.m. Saturday, a 41-year-old Vero Beach man was driving northbound on 25th Street in the right lane, when he reportedly failed to move over and struck the rear of a sheriff’s vehicle, FHP said.
The impact launched the deputy’s vehicle forward into the other two law enforcement vehicles and into the two officers, FHP said.
The driver involved in the crash, whose name was not released, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, FHP said.
