Cooldown Games launches as publisher of games for busy people

Cooldown Games today announced its official launch as an independent games publisher based in Dallas, Texas. The studio is founded by seven people with industry experience at companies such as Gearbox, id Software and Warner Bros. Cooldown plans to focus its publishing efforts on premium titles that cater to gamers with busy lives who can only play certain amounts of time per day.

The studio’s team includes CEO Steve Gibson, CPO Matt Charles, COO Jack Hardesty, CTO Jimmy Sieben, CMO Jeff Skal, CBO Erick Cobbs and CRO Brad Schliesser. The founders have previously worked together at Gearbox Publishing (where Gibson was president) and launched 8 games during their tenure. Gearbox Publishing came under the purview of Take-Two Interactive when the latter acquired Gearbox from Embracer earlier this year.

Skall noted that all of the team members expressed fatigue with massive games and consistently returned to old favorites. “When we started Cooldown Games, we quickly realized that there’s a ton of gamers out there just like us—and we wanted to find the best games that can fit in between our sessions, or seasons, or even just after raid night.” Charles added, “We are looking to work with astute and passionate teams that share our philosophy and observation about player behavior, and we can create a force-multiplying partnership on the path to release.”

Gibson said in a statement, “Our team is confident rational business models will be a long-term strength of Cooldown Games and that just might be a refreshing contrast from many recent industry trends. My passion of helping game makers reach as many game players as possible while making sure that it’s a rewarding experience for everyone involved is at the center of all of this. Let’s make some great games together.”
