Pedestrian in Boynton killed by hit-and-run driver; police identify suspect

BOYNTON BEACH — A driver struck and killed a Jupiter man as he crossed the street in Boynton Beach on Saturday morning.

Investigators said 60-year-old Robert Elsmore was pushing an empty wheelchair southbound near the center line of Old Congress Avenue shortly before 2 a.m. when a man in a 2000 Honda Odyssey hit him from behind.

According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, the impact launched the wheelchair and Elsmore, whom first responders pronounced dead at the scene. The Honda continued traveling from the scene.

Authorities identified Jesus Rene Roa, 54, as a suspect in the fatal hit-and-run crash, though no criminal charges were filed as of Sunday morning. County court records indicate Roa, of Atlantis, has a history of traffic infractions, including speeding and driving without a valid license, spanning two decades.
