Alcohol deemed a factor in fatal I-90 crash Sunday morning

Oct. 22—SALEM, S.D. — A 26-year-old woman from Canistota died Sunday morning in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 90.

The South Dakota Department of Public safety says the woman was driving a 2002 Mazda Protege west on the interstate near mile marker 366 when her vehicle left the roadway and collided into the start of a guardrail. The vehicle then re-entered the road, where the driver of a 2005 Dodge Ram collided with the rear end of the Mazda. A Peterbilt semi hauling a livestock trailer then collided with the front of the Mazda.

The woman was not wearing a seat belt and alcohol is considered to be a factor, officials said. She was airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital where she was pronounced dead. The crash occurred at 7:13 a.m., about 2 miles east of the Salem U.S. 81 exit on I-90.

Authorities say the man driving the Dodge Ram is a 56-year-old from Alexandria who was wearing a seat belt. He sustained minor injuries.

The driver of the semi was a 44-year-old man from Milesville, South Dakota, which is located in west central South Dakota.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
